A faithful Christian who believe in resurrection of Christ would confidently say that the soul would stand at the judgement of God either to go to heaven or hell according to the deeds of these soul when they lived on earth.
Every Christian who is baptised is united with Christ, is called to live a holy life, and to remain united with Him in eternal life. The teaching of Christ is significant here; Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No-one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). When we die, and relying on the mercy of God receive the mercy of God through the prayers of church to enter in to heaven to remain united with God eternally.
God created everyone with a free will. Freedom to choose the evil and good, or good of bad. Through the sacrament of baptism, one receives the grace to conquer evil with the power of Holy spirit. The free will also enable one to decline the mercy offered by God and purposefully going away from the salvific work of christ.
It is important to note that God doesn’t want any soul to be lost, and he wants all souls to be saved, and this is the reason why Christ died on the cross for every soul to be saved. The Bible says that God “desires all people to be saved” (1 Timothy 2:4). Although one doesn’t have any knowledge about God and His salvific mission, and searching for God, yet he/she could not find the God, can be get saved with the merciful love of God, and this soul will be saved to eternal life by the mercy of God.
According to the teaching of the church, each one receives his or her eternal reward for his soul at the very moment of their death, either to heaven, purgatory or to hell.
We have to be ready to face the judgement of God any time in our life; Jesus says that we must be ready at all times, because the Son of Man come at an hour when you do not expect him.( Mt 24:44).
The late Archbishop Fulton Sheen stated, “For when the curtain goes down on the last day, and we respond to the call of judgment, we will not be asked what part we played, but how well we played the part that was assigned to us”. We will have to give an account for our life here on earth. At the time of one’s death if the person is free from sin and the effects of previous sins were completely forgiven, then the soul goes straight into heaven, and will enjoy the presence of God, saints and all the angels. It is the most fortunate state that one’s soul see God face to face. Sadly, even if one led a pious life, at the time of the death, if that person were leading a life not in love with the neighbours, our Lord will the soul to the purgatory for the soul’s purification. The speed of the purification depends on the number of prayers, sacrifices and mass offered for this soul here on earth. Unfortunately, if one has died with mortal sin and was rejecting God totally and dying at this stage with no remorse for what the soul has been doing, the soul will be sent to hell immediately after the death.
